Shanmuga Raja, also known as Shanmugaraja, is a renowned Tamil film actor, theatre director, and acting trainer based in Tamil Nadu, India. He is the Founder and Director of NIGAZH Theatre Centre, Madurai, and is widely respected for his significant contribution to Tamil cinema and theatre.

With over 25 years of experience in acting, direction, and theatre education, Shanmuga Raja has established himself as a versatile artist who seamlessly bridges classical theatre and contemporary cinema.

Shanmuga Raja holds a Master’s degree (MA) in Tamil Literature and Theatre Arts and an MPhil in Tamil Literature, reflecting his strong academic foundation in language, culture, and performance studies. To further refine his craft, he joined the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, in 1999, where he completed his Diploma in Design and Direction in 2002.

Theatre Career and NIGAZH Theatre Centre

After completing his training at NSD, Shanmuga Raja founded the NIGAZH Theatre Centre in Madurai. Through NIGAZH, he has actively engaged and trained young talents, contributing to the growth of theatre culture in Tamil Nadu. As an actor, director, and design expert, he has designed and directed numerous acclaimed theatre productions.He has also conducted acting workshops, theatre festivals, and seminars across India and internationally, playing a key role in shaping the next generation of theatre and film artists.

Film Career

Shanmugaraja made his successful film debut in the critically acclaimed Tamil film Virumaandi (2004), starring Kamal Haasan. His performance marked a strong entry into Tamil cinema and opened doors to a wide range of character-driven roles. Since his debut, Shanmuga Raja has acted in more than 80 Tamil films, earning recognition for his realistic performances and strong screen presence. He is known for portraying intense, meaningful, and socially relevant characters.

Casting, Training & Writing

In addition to acting, Shanmugaraja is deeply involved in casting and training actors for films and television serials. His experience as a theatre educator adds depth to his approach to actor preparation. He is also a regular columnist for leading Tamil magazines and has authored two books in Tamil focusing on theatre and culture, further establishing his authority in the field of performing arts.
